Eco-friendly travel destinations you must visit

Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5th to spread awareness about the preservation and conservation of our environment. When efforts are being made by so many countries, we should also play our part and be a responsible and alert citizen of the world.  There are some countries that have made efforts to conserve the natural environment of their territories not only for the local residents but also for the wild animals and tourists. On top of that Eco-tourism industry is also growing rapidly to help us travel responsibly without causing harm to the environment. There are over 180 countries that have made tremendous efforts for environment sustainability, a few of which have been listed below.

What is Eco-tourism?

According to the international Ecotourism society, responsibly traveling to the natural areas that conserve the environment and improve the well being of local people is called Ecotourism.
Which  means that you travel to the natural areas without damaging it's surrounding or disturbing the natural habitat which ensures environmental sustainability.

Here's the list of some countries that have made efforts to preserve their natural environment :-

1. Switzerland

Switzerland has built energy efficient buildings. It also uses solar, thermal and photovoltaic energy sources. It has reduced 300 tons of Carbon dioxide over the past 10 years.
It has made it's air quality so much better by doing so. It currently leads the world in sustainability.

2. France
France is one of the most visited countries in the world. It has made efforts for nature friendly holidays. It has preserved it's biodiversity and natural habitats and has helped reduce water pollution.

3. Denmark
The country has minimized travel impact. Apparently, one third of the country's population use cycles to get to their work places. There are also Eco- friendly amusement parks and Tivoli gardens built to go on wild rides. You can see extensive farmlands, windmills, dense forests and wild flowers in Denmark.

4. Malta
In the Maltese islands the concept of ecotourism and agro tourism is constantly growing. You can walk around in the lap of nature to learn more about the Maltese flora and fauna, visit the vineyards, get to know about salt harvesting procedures and see how honey is made. Hotels and transportation are being constantly upgraded to reduce carbon emissions and to conserve sustainable tourism there.

5. Sweden
Sweden is the second country in the world to introduce ecotourism after Australia. It has set up Nature's Best, an Eco-label that offers Eco-tours by nearly hundreds of Eco-certified tour operators across the country. It has an amazing air quality index and you can also go dog sledding, timber rafting, sea kayaking and enjoy oyster and lobster safaris in the country.

6. Australia
The country has plenty of outdoor areas and wilderness to explore. Fraser island, the world's largest sand island can land you in the best ecotourism experience . It's natural habitat and biodiversity is very beautiful, you can see plenty of penguins, kangaroos, koalas and many other animal and bird species there. The country also has a large tropical rain forestwhich is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

7. Luxembourg
More than 60% of the country's household waste is collected, stored and recycled. The city's transportation is easy to use, travelers can also rent bikes, cycles etc to wander around. They mostly use vegan products and ingredients in the dishes they serve. Many hotels have signed up in the list to become energy efficient in all areas of operation and they also conserve a lot of water.

8. Netherlands
This country had developed a network of farm cottages and country side retreats full of natural goodness. Amsterdam is the most Eco friendly as the government has decided to create several 'smart cities' after the recent "green energy move". This country uses renewable energy projects and cut the overall carbon dioxide footprints.

9. Costa Rica
Costa Rica has devoted 26% of it's land for national parks, wildlife reserves and protected land areas. It conserves it's natural areas, flora & fauna and helps preserve the wildlife species. It has an exceptional biodiversity and helps prevent adverse effects of traditional tourism on the environment. There are plenty of nature activities and Eco lodges throughout the country.

10. Ecuador
Ecotourism in Ecuador includes visits to the Amazon Rain forest and the Amazon basin. It has national parks, heritage sites and lots of protected areas. The government and local organizations like "Yachana" have enabled Ecuador to become a leader in ecotourism.

11. Peru
Peru takes in consideration of preservation of not only natural resources and communities but also it's historical sites. The Machu Picchu is Peru's most traveled tourist destination. The Manu biosphere reserve and Tambopata national reserve are all situated in lush landscapes. Although, the country is still battling with the issue of deforestation, the number of Eco friendly travelers have increased considerably over the past few years.

12. Bhutan
This Buddhist kingdom of Dragons in the Himalayas has undergone a tourism transformation. It is one of the least visited countries in the world but the government has been slowly preserving natural resources and is protecting it's culture. Bhutan is also considered one of the happiest countries in the world. There is a law which states  that more than 60% of the country must remain full of greenery and forests for all the future generations. Bhutan absorbs abundant amount of carbon dioxide than it emits.

There are also countries like Finland, Iceland, New Zealand, Norway, Austria , Zanzibar, Palau, Canada (British Columbia) etc, that have contributed tremendously in ecotourism and preservation of the environment.  There is a list of 180 countries other than these mentioned which practice ecotourism. You can always search it up on Google. If you love nature, you can visit some of theses countries listed above.
