Vaishno Devi Temple travel blog

Here's everything you need to know about travelling to Vaishno Devi :-

The holy temple(shrine) of deity Viashno Devi is located 42kms from the Katra city of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir of India. The shrine is open to all the devotees throughout the year. But many people will suggest you to visit the site between March and October if you plan to go on a good trek. If you enjoy cold and chilly winter weather in the mountains you can go between November to February to get a complete experience of snowfall.

The trek is however not easy and it is about 12 km wide spread. So, if you are a relaxed traveler who wants to take breaks in between for short intervals of time, you can take upto 4 hours 45 minutes maximum to reach the temple. There are no obstacles on the road as the roads are completely developed and well constructed compared to earlier times.
If you get tired in between the journey or if you have elderly people travelling with you, well there's always an option for your family to take a helicopter ride from Katra. However despite taking the helicopter you have to walk for approximately 2.5 kms more. You can find the Mata Vaisho Devi Shrine Board's official website online and book your helicopter ride in advance.

There's also an option to take a palanquin for elderly people. Also, you can take a horse ride but if you have a fear of heights, I suggest you DO NOT opt for horse riding as horses have the tendency to walk along the extreme left side of the road which has really short railings, so you can image sitting on a horse and looking down the deep valley which does not seem to end.
Also, if you book the helicopter from the online website, the tickets are of 1,045 INR per person.
Some people have this wierd fear about their safety while visiting any part of Jammu and Kashmir, but there's absolutely nothing to worry about as Katra is nowhere in the Kashmir area.

What to do in Katra?

If you wish to do something at Katra for a day, you can visit the Bagh-e-Bahu aquarium which is in Jammu. It is basically a fish aquarium with preserved ancient and recent fish specimens. It also has a big park with a scenic view of river Tawi. It is India's biggest underground aquarium. The only thing is that you might have to pay 20 rupees for a mobile phone and 40 rupees for a video camera if you wish to take pictures.

What is NOT allowed inside the Vaishno Devi temple?

Before visiting you should know what not to carry with you while visiting the temple. Items made of leather , cameras and mobile phones are not allowed inside the temple's property. So, you can deposit your belongings to a cloak room(the facilities are available there) or better not to carry them with you.  Since Vaishno devi is a place of worship, you need to dress respectfully. Ideally Indian traditional clothes will do when you are visiting places of worship in India.

Which networks work in the area?

Indian networks like Vodafone, Airtel, Idea, Jio, BSNL work in the area but the internet speed maybe slow depending on the altitude. Some of my friends however told us that Jio postpaid does not work beyond Jammu so the best option is to opt for a BSNL sim.
